Spalanzani's Generator, 2006

sculpture 4 ft deep, 12 ft wide, 22 ft high
solar tower 2 ft deep, 4 ft wide, 11 ft h
bike generator 3 ft deep, 5 ft wide, 3 ft high

Stainless steel, steel, aluminum, paint, bearings, motors, solar panel, sprockets, chains, bike parts, plastic, electronics.

This is a commission for the North Carolina Zoo. The intent was to build a kinetic sculpture driven by renewable energy in a way that talks about alternative enery sources. Energy from the solar panel drives the yellow sculptural arms through an unusual cycle, while visitors can generate energy on the bike generator to drive the blue arms through a similar cycle.

Fabrication: Pete Beeman, Ben Jensen, BBC steel.

Thanks to Ben Jensen, Calbag Metals, Warren Rosenfeld, Greg Will, Starbuck, John Adcock, Will Pickering, and Louie.
